Juniors and tuition

Because of space limitations and the potential for noise issues, regrettably we are having to restrict the attendance of juniors to those aged 15 and over. An exception will be made for under 15s who have an over-the-board rating. 15+ needn’t have a rating. We are not currently running a Junior Club. There is Brighton Chess and Lego Club and Sussex Junior Chess for beginners/improvers.

The Studio is not a large room so please could everyone observe quiet conditions, particularly when important games are in progress. The acoustic curtain will be drawn on match nights (the first one is 31st Oct) but it’s not 100%.

Private tuition is available for juniors and adults. See Juniors page for contact information.

Mid-Sussex League team size for coming season.

As one of only two Brighton & Hove members to attend the AGM this year perhaps i should mention a motion voted through as regards team size. It was decided to retain the 'four board' format for a further season. The following season the situation will be reviewed. I don't know if this will encourage us to enter more teams next year, however, captains will only need to find four players instead of five. Travel to matches may be easier if the driver has a smaller vehicle. It would be nice to have two teams at least in the league for the coming season.

Mid-Sussex League AGM 2022 held yesterday.

Luke Rutherford and myself attended the Mid-Sussex League AGM 2022.This was held at the St Mary's Supporters Club, Lewes. Luke Rutherford came away with two Tankards. He is seen holding the Overall league Tankard and the Division 1 Tankard. Brighton & Hove also clinched the Division 1 trophy, remaining undefeated throughout.. I am seen holding the Mowatt cup [ Division 1 trophy]. The picture shows the various spoils, Brighton & Hove members, took away from the meeting.

Trial nights at the Ralli Hall

The club will be having a try out on Mondays at the Ralli Hall, near Hove station (opposite Tesco Express in Denmark Villas, no. 7 bus). We will be there on Monday April 4th (in the Abraham Room), April 11th (in the Studio) and April 25th (room to be advised), 7-11 pm. Go down the ramp to the left of the main entrance, through the door on the right and along the corridor for the Abraham Room. The Studio is the white building in the car park (down the ramp also). The Ralli looks to be a good venue for us but it is important that we choose the right room.

The Avenue Bridge Club is now closed. We hope to see as many people as possible on the trial nights.

Trial night at The King and Queen pub

The club will be at The King and Queen in Marlborough Place (near the Pavilion) on Thursday 17th March, 7-11 pm. We will be in the first floor function room. We are considering this venue as a future home for the club. Unfortunately no under 18s are allowed on the premises which we can't do anything about at the moment. We hope to see as many old and new members as possible. There will be no chess at the Avenue Bridge Club that night.

Juniors

The Junior Club remains closed and we can't offer any formal tuition. However, juniors may attend the club provided they have reached an adult level of play. We ask that all attendees are vaccinated and please be prepared to wear a mask if your opponent would like you to. An adult should accompany the junior (optional at 16-17). Sussex Junior Chess offer training and a variety of events to enter.
