I have used the game viewer on the Resources page of the website to post one of the games Michael linked to in his post below. This can be done by anyone if you click on IMPORT PGN to load the game from your chess programme, then copy the embed code which appears in the box on the game viewer and paste it into your blog post. You need to look at Options before you publish and click on Interpret typed HTML and then publish even though it looks like a white box on the edit page.

New and improved!!
The digital clock setting instructions Anthony has produced have been further amended to meet our particular time settings and can be seen via the yellow tabs above. These make clock setting a piece of cake for even the most traumatised of techno-phobes. Paper copies will be appearing at the club for hands-on use - so no excuses for not setting your own clock! (Anthony and Michael Cain have also offered expert help if you're stuck.)
Also Anthony, Geoff, Ian and Rob have re-sorted the sets and put many of them into new drawstring bags which are more secure and easier to carry and store. Please try and keep them sorted by counting your set back into its bag and putting any strays or interlopers into a specially-marked box. No more playing with assorted shades of antiquated cream and only vaguely related pieces - this is proper tournament style for 2014!

Easy instructions for setting digital clocks
After buying the new clocks we have been able to 'release' some of the older digital clocks for general use. This has meant a fast learning curve as we all learn how to set them - but worthwhile as we begin to appreciate the benefits of automatic time addition, precise timing and visible seconds. Setting them is easy when you know how (!) so Anthony has produced easy-peasy notes for each one, so you can set them to club tournament time controls without wading through 70 pages of instruction booklet and six languages to find the right bit. The tabs at the top of the Blog link to these notes and sheets will be available at the club. Please try to get the hang of them, particulary if you're a league player, as you need to be able to set your own clock rather than leave it to the captain to set them all and have to deal with any problems. (Being captain is stressful enough!) Once converted to digital you'll never go back!

New Gallery page and match room
The Gallery is now up and running - see new tab above if you are viewing this on the website and not just the blog. Thanks to Michael for help on setting this up. Most of the pictures up there are his as well. If you have any albums you would like to share send me the HTML code for embedding the album in a website and I'll add it to the page. (This is easy on Picasa.)
The first team and the fifth team are both playing tomorrow so the plan is to have the front and back room as one large, silent match room and chat, friendlies and analysis in the small 'poker' room. If you are playing an internal tournament game you can use the match room as well. Please therefore enter the large room very quietly and be aware of how noise carries even from the small room. This should make all match players happier and might be the way to go all season.

Club computer
Hi all,
You may have noticed the recent lack of computer facilities since our old PC gave up the ghost. Anthony has kindly procured a replacement which I will be bringing back to the club tonight. I've installed Fritz 12, Arena (a free chess analysis program) and internet access. If there's anything you think is missing, or you find something doesn't work, please either post here or let me know (as I'm not around much you can always e-mail or pass a message via committee members).
BTW Sue, I think the 'Open' for high ranking players is a good idea.
Cheers, Kevin.

Game viewer
Hi All,
I had some problems embedding a game in this blog, but it seems to work now. I think the problem was that the viewer does not support 'non-standard' .pgn features such as variations, some points to note are:
1) Don't put variations in the pgn file, keep it simple, annotations go between {squiggly brackets}
2) On our resources page, click the large grey 'IMPORT PGN' button.
3) Paste PGN into box
4) If .pgn import is successful it should return to the viewer front page
5) Next to 'IMPORT' button you will now see a box with the code you need to copy, check the 'small' tickbox to display as below, otherwise it is too big for the page.
6) Copy code, then when you are writing the blog entry click the 'Edit HTML' tab BEFORE you paste the code/link int the post.
7) NOTE that if you 'Preview' the post the replay board will be visible but will not replay (this confused me for a while!)

A nice option to get the bigger size is to select the pop-out version which give a link as below, remember to pase the code in 'Edit HTML' mode !

Geekdom
Thanks, Kev. Didn't realise you'd have to have your own very cool blog to pull this off, which now has its own link on the Links page. Hopefully the problems with the game viewer can be sorted as it would be excellent to have a Members' Games archive on the blog. I have labelled yours as a start. This is what the Club Championship is all about (and winning it, of course). Meanwhile there's a forum for debate on chess/tech with the blogger on hand, a subject many of us find nearly (more?) as challenging as chess.

Website news
The Ladder Rapidplay competition listed on the Tournaments page is currently bang up to date, as is the contacts list, for anyone wishing to organise a game in advance. Plus you can now study how to set the digital clocks by downloading the manuals via the links on the Resources page.

Going digital
Recently we have added to our number of digital clocks. Paul Batchelor has written some guidelines to help with using them and I have added these to the website via a public link on the Tournaments page. Please also remember to check the Tournaments page for help with other interactive bits of the website.

More bits, less Bobs
Further to my previous post, apparently Bob's main assistance with putting up the shelving for the library came from Arthur. Thanks Arthur!
On the subject of bits (with segues like that I should have been a DJ), on Saturday I installed Fritz 12 and Chessmaster onto the club PC, the software having been recently donated to us. To run these just turn the PC on and log in as the general club user, no password should be needed. Fritz 12 has a different interface to previous versions so it can be a bit tricky even for experienced users, but it does have some nice features. It is worth noting that this copy came with a year's premium memebership to Playchess.com so it should be possible to play online on the Playchess server or to view Chessbase's multimedia broadcasts. If any members are interested in these features please give it a try, I can offer some assistance if I am around though I don't intend to conduct individual teaching sesssions! If there is a demand I may consider a group seminar on using Fritz, though I am not completely up to speed on version 12 myself yet. If there are any errors running the software please let me know.
