Home win against Dieppe

Our twelfth match against Dieppe resulted in another home win for Brighton against some stiff opposition, especially at the top where Steve Newman faced IM Kamran Shirazi for a closely fought game. Afterwards in-depth analysis, refreshments and chat were enjoyed as we renewed our acquaintance with L'Echiquier Dieppois.

The annual fixtures began in 2007 when we travelled to Dieppe. The 'score' now stands at Brighton 6 Dieppe 5 with one draw. A big thank you to all those who took part to keep this tradition going and ensure we had an opponent for every one of our French visitors, including Anthony who acted as reserve and was invaluable as help.

Dieppe Vs Brighton Chess Club Match Report 2017

We had a fantastic trip to Dieppe this year, although we lost the match 6 to 5. The team played very well considering Brighton was outgraded on every board by some margin.

We had such a fun trip, i really hope this continues for many years to come. A big thanks to the French team who treated us so well, not to mention getting in there cars and coming to pick us all up after the taxi company failed to show up...

Also everyone enjoyed the Doubles speed chess match on the ferry and congrats to Mikolia winning the chocs.

Anyway here are a few pics and video clips;

Saturday 24th September

We are hosting the Dieppe match on Saturday 24th September so the club will be filled to capacity. If members want to come and watch they can but there won't be much space to play and it's probably not going to be a good time for other visitors and non-members. The match will finish at 6:00 pm when the club will be closed to all but the team and committee helpers.

Dieppe v Brighton 2015

And gentlemen in England now a-bed shall think themselves accursed they were not there... etc. that played not in Dieppe against the French.

In the simul on Saturday Callum Brewer, Paul Selby, Julian Clark and Michael Cain got draws against Marie Sebag GM, at 2496 the top female player in France and eighteenth in the world, playing thirty boards in two and a half hours, with only one other draw and 25 wins at lightening speed. Our match against the Dieppe team on Sunday was lost 7/5 but as usual we faced a very strong home team so not at all a bad result. I have put the individual results on the Dieppe page of the website as the blog is resistant to forms. This is Michael's video with more pictures to follow:

A really excellent weekend with much food and drink, and fun and games.

Brighton/Dieppe

I have updated the L'Echiquier Dieppois link on the Links page of our website (it doesn't work from Blogger). Note especially that there is a Brighton/Dieppe page which you can reach via the Tournois tab on their website.

Dieppe 2013

This year's trip to Dieppe will be 31st August/1st September with our match on the Sunday. I will be putting a list up at the club for those interested.

Olivier has asked whether we would like to take part in the annual Festival which takes place in the week leading up to our match. Paul Selby has already booked up for this so a few more might make for a small party. More details are available on L'Echiquier Dieppois website.

Paranormal activity

Just read the French write up for our nervy, edgy close run battle. They talk of a 2 hour delayed ferry crossing coming over; their luggage (chess sets and food) getting taken from them in transit as they had to put their larger baggages in a separate support vehicle on the ferry (interestingly they were going to mug up on variations of the Benko Gambit en masse during the crossing, but this was not to be...) ; of someone seeing a ghost on the crossing; of many staying up till 2am pre match day painting la ville rouge in Brighton's nightspots; of celebrating until 3am following their victoire. Do we have the stamina? They really enjoyed their whole trip but are already planning victory next year to bring the overall match score all square for a massive encounter in 2014. You have been warned.

Dieppe win by a whisker!

Big thanks to everyone for making it a great event on Saturday, particularly for all the effort that went into the cooking, and even more especially to Carl, John S., Rob and Anthony for turning up yesterday for a very thorough, and cheerful, clean-up operation.

Lots more pictures to follow.

Match update

A last minute switch in the French team means Oli gets a slightly tougher match. Rob and Anthony have also been switched following Anthony's ECF grading correction from 110 to 112. Geoff's FIDE rating is 2191 and Paul's is 2048 so the top is better than it looks. I'm not sure how these French Elos were calculated.

Grades and ratings

NB Our team's Elo ratings given below are not FIDE ratings but the ECF grades as translated into Elo by the French. Any FIDE ratings will be different and so will the calculations done the EFC way, i.e. ECF x 8 + 650. If you think the French are under an illusion so be it!

Dieppe

I have made a slight change to the Dieppe line-up - see post below - as I unforgivably forgot to include Callum who applied by email back in June. Great to have have him on board!

There is a snazzy new website for the Dieppe Chess Club with a special Brighton blog dedicated to our encounters over the last five years.

Dieppe Match

We are now looking for players for our next match which is the home match against Dieppe on Saturday 29th September. Olivier has sent their player list and most are now familiar names (and faces). Please let me know if you would like to play or sign the list at the club. Stronger players are particularly encouraged to sign up for a well-balanced match. Our only 'international', it's a friendly event and games will not be graded. And, for the first time, the match will take place at the club.
