BHCC AGM on Thursday, 5th September at 8:00pm

As everyone should have already received the agenda and last year's minutes there won't be more than a handful of paper copies at the meeting. In the absence of any further nominations the elections will be as follows:

• President (Sue Chadwick, standing for re-election)
• Treasurer (Geoff James, standing for re-election)
• Secretary (Rob Counsell, standing for re-election)
• Tournament Controller (Andrew Caswill, standing for re-election)
• Librarian (Bob Davies, not standing for re-election. Anthony Stanton standing)
• Publicity (Michael Cain, standing for re-election)
• Ordinary member (Carl Rabey has moved away. Robin Jones standing)

Our teams for the coming season will be captained by the following:

• First Team: Paul Batchelor
• Second Team: Brian Izzard
• Third Team: Michael Cain
• Fourth Team: Jan ten Sythoff
• Fifth Team: Andrew Caswill

Our teams depend on the willingness of captains to organise both the home matches and the away transport. Geoff is the regular driver for the first team. If you would like to see us back up to six teams again next season you need to propose a captain, any level, willing and able to take this on.

Annual subscriptions are due at the AGM and should be paid, preferably by cheque, to Paul Selby who will be acting as temporary treasurer: £50 full membership, £30 concessionary (if in receipt of means-tested benefits) and £15 for U18s. Please remember to bring this with you to the meeting.

You will also be able to sign up to play in an internal club tournament (current ECF membership a requirement - annual subscriptions run from 1st September).

Brighton Festival 17th August 2013

We are also holding a second chess event "Brunswick Festival Chess Promotional Day" on Saturday August 17th from 11am to 7pm located at the prestigious Brunswick Square, Hove.

We have been allocated a space at Brunswick Square as part of the popular Brunswick Festival. Additionally the event organizer has kindly donated 2 large tables which we can use to play chess on during the day.

August closure dates and AGM

Please note that due to the Street Chess event on the 10th August (see below) the club will now be closed on 10th, 15th and 17th August. 'Closed' means properly closed with the building locked up so remember to come along to the Street Chess instead.

The club AGM is on Thursday 5th September at 8:00 pm. Please send any agenda items to Sue or Rob by mid-August.

Street Chess and Chess Club Promotional Day - 10th August 2013

Hi Brighton Chess Club Members,

Good News, I am going to organize another Street Chess/Chess Club Promotional Day on Saturday August 10th 2013 from 9.30am to 4pm located on NEW ROAD, opposite Brighton Theater Royal (same location as last time).

What are we doing? We are going to erect 3/4 chess tables in a line and play 5 min speed chess throughout the day, we are also going to hand out Brighton Chess Club Business Cards to the general public. I'm sure if we play a lot of chess and look friendly, this will attract the attention of people walking by and hopefully we can chat and tell them more about our cool chess club and gain new members. :-)

Tournaments

The tournaments have now ended for the 2012/2013 season.
There has been a fantastic response from members. The TT had 100% completion. Other tournaments have had a very good response with only a few people withdrawing early.The overall result has ben some very tough competitions with due reward to the final winners.

MSCL AGM

MSCL AGM is next Tuesday, 18th June at 7:45pm in Lewes. The agenda, proposed rule changes and last year's minutes are all on the MSCL website.

McArthur Cup Final 2013

On a sunny day Brighton & Hove travelled to the St Francis & Haywards Heath venue. The outcome was to match the weather from a Brighton & Hove point of view.
Brian Denman was White in a Tarrasch French. i saw him win a pawn and then the Queen of his opponent Robert Fitzgerald. One nil to Brighton & Hove.
Luke Rutherford was Black in a Scheveningen Sicilian. His game looked quite wild. His opponent however sacrificed a Piece unsoundly and Luke was able to capitalise on this. Two nil to Brighton & Hove.
Chris Lowe was White playing against a Centre Counter defence. Despite an apparently equal middlegame he was eventually able to outplay his opponent and clinch the match for Brighton & Hove. We were Three-Nil up and had already an unassailable Board Count position.
Geoffrey James was Black in a Two Knights Defence game. After a long struggle he went on to win an exchange and convert his advantage. Four nil to Brighton & Hove.
John Henshaw was White in a Slav Opening. This was the last game to finish decisively as John was to convert his advantage and take the win. Five nil to Brighton & Hove.
My game was a Sicilian 2.Na3. An unusual opening that led eventually to a draw.
The final score had been 5.5-0.5 in favour of Brighton & Hove. This is the Fifth consecutive year a Brighton & Hove side has won the competition.

Eyes wide shut

"Could beat you with my eyes shut" took on a very literal meaning on Saturday 18th when Ezra Kirk took on Peter Benson, Grant Minshull, Robin Jones, Andrew Caswill and Sue Chadwick in a blindfold simul. He played a second round against Roger Berryman, Bob Davies and Anthony Stanton where a mentally misplaced pawn allowed the loss of a rook and eventually the game to Anthony. All the other games were complex and fairly swiftly winning for Ezra. Brian Denman and Luke Rutherford monitored the moves. Thanks to Ezra for a mind-blowing performance which was enjoyed by all.

Tournaments

  A final reminder, the tournaments end on June 30th.
  Please aim to play as many games as possible over the last few weeks.In many tournaments there seems to be an exciting close run finish.
   Please aim to avoid playing games during the very last week. Games in this week can be difficult to arrange.
   During the summer months, members may wish to continue to play graded games with the longplay ladder tournament ( LPL ) and/or the rapid play tournament (RP.)

PS Please note the change of start to 3:00 pm on Saturday for the simul.

Two things: one is to phrase your beefs or inspirations about the MSCL into neat proposals for the AGM, to get to the secretary by tomorrow at the latest for the AGM on Tuesday 18th June - but as avid readers of the MSCL website I'm sure you all knew that.

Second, Ezra's blindfold simul on Saturday will start around 3:00 pm for the first batch of players. There's still room for more in the second batch but only a few - yes, blindfold simul folks - so spaces are limited. £4 a board on the day.

The Daily Telegraph today (Tues 7 May) gives the moves from Ezra Kirk's 23-move win
against GM Keith Arkell in the 4 Nations Chess League, gaining an IM norm.

Grandmaster draws

Michael Cain, Andrew Caswill, Rob Counsell, Bob Davies, Robin Jones, Oli Weiss and myself all attended the opening of the new Mind Sports Club on Fourth Avenue on Friday night (see Competition on Fourth Avenue post below). As the main attraction seemed to be the poker tables we all got to play GM Raymond Keene in a ten-board simul, being distracted the while by elegant finger morsels and, possibly, the equally elegant cocktail waitresses. Some good games were played and Michael and I accepted draws - YES WE DID!! An excellent - and entirely free - evening.

Ezra's blindfold simul Sat.18th May

Ezra has kindly offered to do a double blindfold simul on Saturday 18th May. It will be open to all members below 170 grade. Places will go to the first 10 applicants who either sign up at the club or contact me via email. The two simuls will run consecutively with five boards in each and at £4 a board (to give Ezra some pocket money for the summer). This may be your only chance to beat the top FIDE English U18! Spectators also welcome.
