Match update
A last minute switch in the French team means Oli gets a slightly tougher match. Rob and Anthony have also been switched following Anthony's ECF grading correction from 110 to 112. Geoff's FIDE rating is 2191 and Paul's is 2048 so the top is better than it looks. I'm not sure how these French Elos were calculated.

MSCL fixtures published
The MSCL fixture list is now up on the Fixtures page of the B&HCC website, all 199 of them! The divisional split has been adjusted to 12/11/13 after a failure of nerve by Crowborough 2. As always we are indebted to Julie Denning for managing to squeeze everything in yet again. Thursday 18th October is the day for all first and third division players to keep their diaries free.

Grades and ratings
NB Our team's Elo ratings given below are not FIDE ratings but the ECF grades as translated into Elo by the French. Any FIDE ratings will be different and so will the calculations done the EFC way, i.e. ECF x 8 + 650. If you think the French are under an illusion so be it!

Club computer
Hi all,
You may have noticed the recent lack of computer facilities since our old PC gave up the ghost. Anthony has kindly procured a replacement which I will be bringing back to the club tonight. I've installed Fritz 12, Arena (a free chess analysis program) and internet access. If there's anything you think is missing, or you find something doesn't work, please either post here or let me know (as I'm not around much you can always e-mail or pass a message via committee members).
BTW Sue, I think the 'Open' for high ranking players is a good idea.
Cheers, Kevin.

More on ECF - see below
One of our former club members, CJ de Mooi, resigned from his position as ECF President on Saturday. Ever out-spoken and controversial, and still better known as a television 'Egghead', he has been offered a job in the world of commercial chess which he considers incompatible with his position at the ECF. Roger Edwards (?) is currently the only candidate for the post - to be confirmed at the ECF AGM on 13th October.
However, don't let this stop you taking out ECF membership - only 17 of our members have signed up so far - which means so far only 17 lucky members will be appearing on our internal tournament charts! (see post on September 3 below) Club membership subscriptions are also due and will be accepted by any committee member any Thursday or Saturday at the club.
ECF Membership Rates:
• BRONZE £13 a year (Juniors £9)
• SILVER £19 a year (Juniors £13)
• GOLD £28 a year (Juniors £22)
• PLATINUM £60 a year (Juniors £60)
You only need BRONZE for all graded games at the club and in the Mid-Sussex League. The year runs from 1st September and it costs the same whenever you join in the year. The £2 per person per game alternative will NOT be available for internal tournaments.

Dieppe
I have made a slight change to the Dieppe line-up - see post below - as I unforgivably forgot to include Callum who applied by email back in June. Great to have have him on board!
There is a snazzy new website for the Dieppe Chess Club with a special Brighton blog dedicated to our encounters over the last five years.

The Brighton and Hove Open?
Thank you to all the people who turned up on Thursday for the AGM. It was a good turnout and the the committee naturally appreciates the support of the membership as well as their ideas and feedback.
Thinking about the concerns Brian Denman was voicing about giving our stronger players more playing opportunities within the club - there has been something of an ongoing debate these last few years around the set up of the club championship - I wonder whether we are missing an opportunity to reach out to our other local clubs. I am thinking particularly of Woodpushers and Knoll Knights, both small clubs which enter teams in the MSCL but run no internal tournaments of their own. We could offer players over 160 (say) the opportunity to play in an open Brighton and Hove all-play-all tournament for a small fee for one year as an experiment. It could be the Club Championship with the proviso that they have to be full members of the club to win the trophy. I think this would have a number of obvious advantages - not least broadcasting the appeal of our club to the local talent!
I was going to put this on the committee blog but as most of your esteemed and hard-working committee are but humble players - with the exception of our current club champion - it doesn't directly concern us. What do others think - both regular members and the likely contenders?

BHCC v Dieppe Saturday 29th September
This is the line-up against Dieppe at the end of the month. With sixteen boards we will need all the space we can get and quiet upstairs - friendlies can be played either in the bar or in the far room downstairs. Spectators welcome. Grade and category used for board order. Colours - blanc/noir - apply to the French players.

AGM and ECF alert for Thursday 6th September
The Club AGM is this Thursday at 8:00 pm. All members have been sent the agenda, and last year's minutes and financial accounts have gone by email. There are no extra items to debate and so far all post-holders have indicated their willingness to continue, with no other contenders. And we have six captains ready for running six teams in the mid-Sussex League. So please come if you can. Business should be short but Geoffrey will be taking subscriptions - please remember to bring cash or cheque. Andrew will be signing people up for the standard play tournaments and rapid play ladder.....
BUT - please note - you will only be able to sign up for these if you have joined both the club and the ECF. This is a new requirement. ECF membership runs for a year from 1st September so it would help if you join before Thursday - you can do it easily online - see http://www.englishchess.org.uk/ - or by post. Help will be provided on Thursday if necessary. Joining the ECF will also make you eligible to play for the MSCL (otherwise it will not be free). You can join the club without joining the ECF but you will only be able to play friendly, ungraded games. This is because of a change in the way the ECF is funded and not a change the club has any influence over.

Hi Robert,
good spot... unfortunately they have the position wrong in the Times as well as the event. However Callum did play Akshaya and she did win...
Since the British Callum played in the UKCC 2012 CHALLENGERS "C" section where he came joint 4th (top under 11). This tournament starts in the schools, the top players progress to a county competition, this is followed by a South and North section and then the finals.
Last weekend he played for the England Squad against a team from France, unfortunately we lost to the French but Callum had a good second day in an individual rapid play tournament being the highest placed England player. Tomorrow (well later today) Callum is off to Belgium to play for the England Squad again... dad only has to get him to st Pancras this time...
