As the Christmas holiday dates dodge the all important Thursdays and Saturdays we are open all over Christmas.
On Thursday 20th Sylvia has proposed we go for a slight festivity and Julian has granted us use of the oven. Sylvia and I will be bringing in festive things to heat and share so bring a little something if you like. Otherwise just turn up - reindeer headgear etc. optional but bells on them probably a step too far.
After that it's Hastings again with opportunities to play at all levels from 28th December to 6th January, or just go for the entertainment with cheerily brilliant Chris Ward in the commentary room. You can't lose!

4th Team Success
A resounding 4-1 win for the 4th team v. Uckfield 1 on 29th November ends our run of losses. Brian Izzard's unfinished game (as black, with a knight outpost in enemy territory and a king-side pawn majority) v. Gerry Michaud on board 1 was adjudicated in Brian's favour. A notable success against a player graded 30 points higher. Well done everybody.

Internal tournaments
As you may know, or maybe not, we are trying to improve the tournaments this year and make the results fairer. In the past the tournaments have suffered from producing patchy results from which it is hard for the Tournament Controller to pick a clear winner. The problem arises because members sign up, play a few games, and then fail to complete. Early games get played but later on they can become harder to arrange with people busy, away or difficult to contact. Meanwhile people still in the tournament are not best pleased if any of their earlier results are discounted because others haven't been able to arrange a match.
The Tournament Controller has the discretion to sort this out and his decision is final. However, after discussion, we have decided that this year there will be a decided shift towards no games being discounted, whatever the later difficulties. This will give an advantage, possibly, to players who take an early initiative to contact their opponents and pin them down for match dates. But we hope this advantage will be vanishing small as all the games get played.
Please feel free to comment on this if you wish and let the Tournament Controller know if you are having any problems with either playing your games or contacting your opponents.

Any old mugs?
Are your cupboards bursting with old mugs? Make room for your Christmas presents by bringing your tired old mugs to the club where they will be fully appreciated. We need more to be able to cope on double match nights. Thanks.

Near 6th team misses
The 6th team was once again close to scoring some points in their last two matches.
The home game against Worthing 3 we lost 1.5 - 3.5, where I was a bit lucky to win and Michael Chau did well to earn a draw.
The away game against Horsham 4 we also lost 1.5 - 3.5 with Hussaini winning on top board and Sue drawing on board 2. Carl and Oli gained strong positions, but unfortunately could not convert, and the less said about my game the better!
No more matches until next year so lets hope we can get some points in 2013.

Keeping captains happy
4.2.2 Whether nominated or not, a player from a lower team may appear on a match score card 3 times for higher teams while retaining his eligibility to play for the lower team. Upon appearing on a match score card a 4th time for any higher team the player becomes ineligible to play for the lower team. see Rules MSCLNow that the season is well underway please keep track of your own match appearances as it's not always easy for captains to know whether you will still be eligible for their team by the day of the match. Don't leave it all to them!! This also applies to any other help you can give them on the day - remember: no captains, no teams! So keep your captain happy. Thanks.

Mysterious Players in '62
I reckon Geoffrey James and Brian Denman are Two of these three individuals. Geoffrey is perhaps a little easier to recognise. Brian must have been quite young when this was taken. He is perhaps 4-5 years younger than Geoffrey here.

New Gallery page and match room
The Gallery is now up and running - see new tab above if you are viewing this on the website and not just the blog. Thanks to Michael for help on setting this up. Most of the pictures up there are his as well. If you have any albums you would like to share send me the HTML code for embedding the album in a website and I'll add it to the page. (This is easy on Picasa.)
The first team and the fifth team are both playing tomorrow so the plan is to have the front and back room as one large, silent match room and chat, friendlies and analysis in the small 'poker' room. If you are playing an internal tournament game you can use the match room as well. Please therefore enter the large room very quietly and be aware of how noise carries even from the small room. This should make all match players happier and might be the way to go all season.

Progress and opportunity
Congrats to the sixth team in their match against Haywards Heath 2 (average grade 135) and also to the fifth team who pulled off a similar feat against Worthing 3 last Monday (average grade 142). With 2-3 scores they didn't quite win but these results prove we can surprise the best of the third division. I hope we can continue as far as possible to field our strongest teams early in the season, giving our promoted teams the best chance of staying up and the sixth team a good run for its money.
Meanwhile e2e4 Brighton is filling up with 90 entrants so far. Two weeks to go if you still want to join the dozen or so members already signed up. This is always a very well run event and, well, why not? Eat your sandwiches on the seafront and it's as cheap as it gets!

Paranormal activity
Just read the French write up for our nervy, edgy close run battle. They talk of a 2 hour delayed ferry crossing coming over; their luggage (chess sets and food) getting taken from them in transit as they had to put their larger baggages in a separate support vehicle on the ferry (interestingly they were going to mug up on variations of the Benko Gambit en masse during the crossing, but this was not to be...) ; of someone seeing a ghost on the crossing; of many staying up till 2am pre match day painting la ville rouge in Brighton's nightspots; of celebrating until 3am following their victoire. Do we have the stamina? They really enjoyed their whole trip but are already planning victory next year to bring the overall match score all square for a massive encounter in 2014. You have been warned.

New tournaments published
The new tournaments are now up. Please read the updated Tournaments page as well for further information. Please note that there are three requirements this year before your name can appear in a club tournament:
1. You have joined the club.
2. You have joined the ECF so your results can be graded.
3. You have requested to join a tournament.
If your name doesn't appear in a tournament and you wish to be added please address the points above! If you still haven't appeared please contact the Tournament Controller, Andrew Caswill.
This year we are putting the emphasis on everyone committing to one tournament and completing all their games. If you really want or need to withdraw please do so promptly so that someone else can take your place. The tournaments are limited to twelve so once they're full they're full. The vacant places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. There will be another open tournament in the New Year for late joiners and members who have played most or all of their tournament games.
The Club Championship has gone back to being an all-play-all in order to give the top players more opportunity to play each other. The Denman Cup is lower graded to allow new members the chance to join and fill the spaces during the year. The Tasker Tankard replaces the Eric Cohen with the generous gift of a silver tankard to the club by Neil Tasker.
***There will be a presentation of the Tankard to the Club next Saturday 13th at 6:00 pm in the bar when Neil will also be providing certain refreshments! All members welcome.
Please use the Members' Contact Details link on the Tournaments page to contact you opponents - it connects to a regularly updated google document where email addresses and 'phone numbers are interactive.
Good luck and, win or lose, enjoy your games!

New contact list
Members of the club can now find the email address and 'phone number of every member via the Link on the Tournaments page of the website. The list is only visible to members. Access to the list requires you to sign in to your google account - all the hints on this are also on the Tournaments page. If you have difficulty please let me know which email address you are using for access so I can check I have used the right one, or you may not have rejoined the club yet this season. Also please let me know if you would like any of your details changed. The list is so you can contact your tournament opponents and team captains can contact you. The new tournaments will be published next week.

Dieppe win by a whisker!
Big thanks to everyone for making it a great event on Saturday, particularly for all the effort that went into the cooking, and even more especially to Carl, John S., Rob and Anthony for turning up yesterday for a very thorough, and cheerful, clean-up operation.
Lots more pictures to follow.

Match update
A last minute switch in the French team means Oli gets a slightly tougher match. Rob and Anthony have also been switched following Anthony's ECF grading correction from 110 to 112. Geoff's FIDE rating is 2191 and Paul's is 2048 so the top is better than it looks. I'm not sure how these French Elos were calculated.

MSCL fixtures published
The MSCL fixture list is now up on the Fixtures page of the B&HCC website, all 199 of them! The divisional split has been adjusted to 12/11/13 after a failure of nerve by Crowborough 2. As always we are indebted to Julie Denning for managing to squeeze everything in yet again. Thursday 18th October is the day for all first and third division players to keep their diaries free.

Grades and ratings
NB Our team's Elo ratings given below are not FIDE ratings but the ECF grades as translated into Elo by the French. Any FIDE ratings will be different and so will the calculations done the EFC way, i.e. ECF x 8 + 650. If you think the French are under an illusion so be it!

Club computer
Hi all,
You may have noticed the recent lack of computer facilities since our old PC gave up the ghost. Anthony has kindly procured a replacement which I will be bringing back to the club tonight. I've installed Fritz 12, Arena (a free chess analysis program) and internet access. If there's anything you think is missing, or you find something doesn't work, please either post here or let me know (as I'm not around much you can always e-mail or pass a message via committee members).
BTW Sue, I think the 'Open' for high ranking players is a good idea.
Cheers, Kevin.

More on ECF - see below
One of our former club members, CJ de Mooi, resigned from his position as ECF President on Saturday. Ever out-spoken and controversial, and still better known as a television 'Egghead', he has been offered a job in the world of commercial chess which he considers incompatible with his position at the ECF. Roger Edwards (?) is currently the only candidate for the post - to be confirmed at the ECF AGM on 13th October.
However, don't let this stop you taking out ECF membership - only 17 of our members have signed up so far - which means so far only 17 lucky members will be appearing on our internal tournament charts! (see post on September 3 below) Club membership subscriptions are also due and will be accepted by any committee member any Thursday or Saturday at the club.
ECF Membership Rates:
• BRONZE £13 a year (Juniors £9)
• SILVER £19 a year (Juniors £13)
• GOLD £28 a year (Juniors £22)
• PLATINUM £60 a year (Juniors £60)
You only need BRONZE for all graded games at the club and in the Mid-Sussex League. The year runs from 1st September and it costs the same whenever you join in the year. The £2 per person per game alternative will NOT be available for internal tournaments.

Dieppe
I have made a slight change to the Dieppe line-up - see post below - as I unforgivably forgot to include Callum who applied by email back in June. Great to have have him on board!
There is a snazzy new website for the Dieppe Chess Club with a special Brighton blog dedicated to our encounters over the last five years.

The Brighton and Hove Open?
Thank you to all the people who turned up on Thursday for the AGM. It was a good turnout and the the committee naturally appreciates the support of the membership as well as their ideas and feedback.
Thinking about the concerns Brian Denman was voicing about giving our stronger players more playing opportunities within the club - there has been something of an ongoing debate these last few years around the set up of the club championship - I wonder whether we are missing an opportunity to reach out to our other local clubs. I am thinking particularly of Woodpushers and Knoll Knights, both small clubs which enter teams in the MSCL but run no internal tournaments of their own. We could offer players over 160 (say) the opportunity to play in an open Brighton and Hove all-play-all tournament for a small fee for one year as an experiment. It could be the Club Championship with the proviso that they have to be full members of the club to win the trophy. I think this would have a number of obvious advantages - not least broadcasting the appeal of our club to the local talent!
I was going to put this on the committee blog but as most of your esteemed and hard-working committee are but humble players - with the exception of our current club champion - it doesn't directly concern us. What do others think - both regular members and the likely contenders?

BHCC v Dieppe Saturday 29th September
This is the line-up against Dieppe at the end of the month. With sixteen boards we will need all the space we can get and quiet upstairs - friendlies can be played either in the bar or in the far room downstairs. Spectators welcome. Grade and category used for board order. Colours - blanc/noir - apply to the French players.

AGM and ECF alert for Thursday 6th September
The Club AGM is this Thursday at 8:00 pm. All members have been sent the agenda, and last year's minutes and financial accounts have gone by email. There are no extra items to debate and so far all post-holders have indicated their willingness to continue, with no other contenders. And we have six captains ready for running six teams in the mid-Sussex League. So please come if you can. Business should be short but Geoffrey will be taking subscriptions - please remember to bring cash or cheque. Andrew will be signing people up for the standard play tournaments and rapid play ladder.....
BUT - please note - you will only be able to sign up for these if you have joined both the club and the ECF. This is a new requirement. ECF membership runs for a year from 1st September so it would help if you join before Thursday - you can do it easily online - see http://www.englishchess.org.uk/ - or by post. Help will be provided on Thursday if necessary. Joining the ECF will also make you eligible to play for the MSCL (otherwise it will not be free). You can join the club without joining the ECF but you will only be able to play friendly, ungraded games. This is because of a change in the way the ECF is funded and not a change the club has any influence over.

Hi Robert,
good spot... unfortunately they have the position wrong in the Times as well as the event. However Callum did play Akshaya and she did win...
Since the British Callum played in the UKCC 2012 CHALLENGERS "C" section where he came joint 4th (top under 11). This tournament starts in the schools, the top players progress to a county competition, this is followed by a South and North section and then the finals.
Last weekend he played for the England Squad against a team from France, unfortunately we lost to the French but Callum had a good second day in an individual rapid play tournament being the highest placed England player. Tomorrow (well later today) Callum is off to Belgium to play for the England Squad again... dad only has to get him to st Pancras this time...

Callum's Summer
Callum, has had a busy summer, representing England at the Glorney Cup competition, taking part in the U12 section, the Stokes Cup, he scored 5/6 and helped England win the section.
Callum also had great time at the British scoring 4.5/7 in the U12s, coming joint 3rd.
Callum is really happy that people were following his progress at the British and appreciates the support.

ECF Membership
After a meeting of the committee last night we decided on the following for next season:
1. Present subscription levels will remain unchanged.
2. All members wishing to enter internal tournaments will be required to be members of the ECF. This is because of recent funding changes in the ECF whereby non-membership will require a £2 game fee for every graded game played, per person. The same will be true of games in the MSCL but there will be a choice here - you can still pay the £2 to your captain each time if you prefer. If you're an ECF member, you'll pay nothing.
ECF membership runs for a year from 1st September. You can join online for £12 via the ECF website. You can do this now, ahead of the AGM.
The AGM agenda will now be coming out later in the month.

Congratulations to Geoff
Geoff has succeeded in holding onto the Club Championship trophy this year, beating Luke in the final 1½-½.
The knock-out format attracted twenty-two entrants and provided some unusual encounters and interesting games. However we might try again to run an all-play-all Club Championship next season, perhaps restricted to members graded over 150 - currently a select group of eight. This would have the benefit of giving those eight more opportunities to play in the club. Feedback on your preferences welcome!

Tournaments
A final reminder that the club tournaments end on Tuesday 31st July. Some people may be able to arrange games at alternative venues so as to meet the final deadline.
Hopefully several people can find the time to finish a few more games so that the individual tournaments have a good completion .Then a fairer comparison can be made between the competitors.

The end of a successful season: AGMs and Awards
The Mid-Sussex League AGM minutes are now published. Paul
collected the first division winners' cup and Luke the tankard for best
individual performance in division one. Congratulations to them and the
other first team players: Brian, Geoff and John. The second team are promoted to join the first in division one next season and the fourth team move up to join the third in the second division. The fifth team will then have a new sixth team to contend with in the third division as we revert to fielding six teams in the league: ample opportunities for all our promising new talent.
The Sussex County Chess Association's AGM is due to take place, also at the Lewes venue, next Tuesday 17th at 7:30 pm. I can forward the agenda and last year's minutes to anyone interested and the meeting welcomes anyone who would like to attend.

Chess Promotional Day
Hi Brighton Chess Club,
Good Skills, I am happy to report that the Brighton & Hove Chess Club Promotional Day was a resounding success and much better than I hoped or imagined. I would like to say a BIG Thank You to the many chess members who came and supported the club during the day. We were very lucky with the weather it was sunny with blue skies, the Brighton community was very interested with a huge amount of people showing interest by watching, taking lots of pictures, asking questions and playing chess with us and giving us tough games.
Please click on the following link to see more pictures of the day ;-
I hope we can organize another summer chess event this August and would be interested to know if you would be interested in joining me?
Thank You Again,
Michael

Brighton Chess Club Promotional Day 30th JUNE 2012
Hi Brighton Chess Club,
We are going to have a Chess Club Promotional Day to make people in Brighton and Hove aware of our club and hope to gain keen new members.
Date: I would like to invite you all to the Brighton Chess Club Promotional Day which will be held at 11 o'clock on Saturday the 30th June 2012
Address: Located on New Road the pedestrianized street opposite the Theater Royal Brighton.
Map: Here is a map link to the event:- Brighton Chess Club Promotional Day Location
What are we doing: We are going to erect 3/4 chess tables in a line and play 5min speed chess through out the day, we are also going to hand out our new Brighton Chess Club Business Cards to the general public. If we play a lot of chess and look friendly, im sure this will attract the attention of people walking by and hopefully we can to chat to them and tell them more about our club.
Action: I would like some of you to help me with this event? I need about 6 people to play speed chess through out the day with each and to encourage members of the general public to play chess with us. I would like as many of you as possible to come down during the day and hopefully take turns helping play chess and chatting with the general public.
Looking forward to seeing you all on this day. Saturday 30th JUNE at 11 o'clock to 4 o'clock.
Many Thanks
Michael
My Mobile number is (07976) 739911. Please give me a ring if you want to find out more.

Dieppe Match
We are now looking for players for our next match which is the home match against Dieppe on Saturday 29th September. Olivier has sent their player list and most are now familiar names (and faces). Please let me know if you would like to play or sign the list at the club. Stronger players are particularly encouraged to sign up for a well-balanced match. Our only 'international', it's a friendly event and games will not be graded. And, for the first time, the match will take place at the club.
